ST.-PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY
GRADUATE-LEVEL (MASTER) PROGRAM IN NEUROSCIENCE,
'FROM NEURON TO COGNITION'

The graduate-level (Master) Program in Neuroscience From Neuron to Cognition based at the University of St.-Petersburg, Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences, has been successfully operating since its launch in 2006 under the auspices of the trans-European Tempus programme.

The Program offers full compliance with the European standards in Education:

  • Contemporary Courses in English and Russian with emphasis in the former language

  • Practicing in the leading laboratories in Helsinki University, University of Hamburg and Saint-Petersburg University

  • Access to up-to-date scientific literature, including leading journals in Neuroscience, bestselling handbooks in Neuroscience

  • Application of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

Program lasts 2,5 years, including the Master thesis defense.

The Program is based on the three main lecture modules:

  1. Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience
  2. Cognitive Neuroscience
  3. Computational Neuroscience & Math Methods

Program will use European Credit Transfer System ECTS

The full Master’s Program takes two years and equals 120 credits (ECTS):
Lecture courses and seminars: 80 ECTS units (compulsory across-modular courses - 50,
compulsory module courses – 20, optional module courses - 10).
Master’s thesis including training in practical research activities: 30 credits.
Others (lectures, conferences, workshops, summer schools): 10 credits.

Students will have unique opportunity to attend courses and practical trainings in the University of Helsinki (HU) and Hamburg university (ZMNH):

  • “Neuronal oscillators”, ZMHH

  • “Analysis of Ion Currents in excitable cells”, ZMHH

  • Methods of Cognitive Neuroscience (EEG, MEG, TMS)”, HU

  • “Advanced optical microscopy”, HU

Prerequisites and requirements for students:

The admission of the students will be based on the results of tests in Neurobiology and English. The following requirements have to be satisfied upon enrollment to the Program

  1. Bachelor Degree or Diploma in specialization

  2. Knowledge of English

  3. Mobility

  4. Accordance of the preparation level to educational criteria of the program (rules of Russian Federation for entering to Master’s program * 36 Kb * 13 Kb )

Exam on Biology is obligatory for those who do not have Bachelor Degree in Biological disciplines.

Up to 8 students may be enrolled in the degree program each year.

There is a possibility to be enrolled on the paid basis also including educational loan from program “Kredo” http://www.prokredo.ru
